2026-2027 AGE GROUP CHANGE

SCHOOL YEAR AGE GROUP FORMATION

Beginning with the 2026–2027 seasonal year, BEST FC will transition to a school-year age group formation model. Age groups will no longer be based on a player's birth year (January 1–December 31) and will instead align with the U.S. Soccer school-year calendar of August 1–July 31.

This change, adopted by U.S. Soccer, US Youth Soccer, and US Club Soccer, is intended to better align players with their school-age peers, promote social development, and improve player retention by allowing teammates to progress together through both school and soccer.  More information from U.S. Soccer.

Under this model, players will generally be grouped with others in their academic grade rather than strictly by calendar birth year.

To determine your player's age group for the 2026–2027 season, please review the age group chart below or utilize the U.S. Soccer Age Group Formation Tool.

Example: A player born in October 2016 falls within the August 1, 2016–July 31, 2017 birthdate range and will be placed in the U10 age group for the 2026–2027 season.

When does the change take effect?
The change begins with the 2026–2027 seasonal year. There are no changes to player placement during the 2025–2026 season.

Yes. Player placement decisions are made by BEST FC coaching and technical staff based on factors including technical ability, tactical understanding, physical development, psychological readiness, commitment, and long-term developmental needs.

Will players automatically move teams based on grade level?
No. BEST FC will evaluate each player's developmental needs and make placement decisions that best support both individual growth and team development.

BEST FC intends to maintain coaching continuity whenever possible. Any coaching changes will be communicated to families in advance.

Will tryouts change?
Tryout registration will be based on a player's date of birth and corresponding school-year age group. Current BEST FC players will continue to be evaluated throughout the season, with roster decisions based on developmental progress and performance.
